1987 and even 1988 had that feel to me.

Not really an opinion. I occasionaly rewatch a Dic episode and its sad how bland they make every character.
Most of the 1990 crew are unremarkable. Pathfinder has a bit of southern accent, but what can you say about him? Ambush, he got a character episode, but still his former galpal Evy the range viper was more interesting. Sub-Zero's file card...he's MEAN and an officer. Dic's version, sounds like a kid recruited out of high school...there's a bit of worry in his voice.
No matter how over-the-top Sunbow's actions sequences got, they were not boring. Dic made action shots boring. Like watching Victory at Volcania...lasers fire...shows lasers firing...maybe a vehicle explodes...repeat...zzzz....bad animation makes it worse.
Sunbow knew how to move a story and develop characters. Dragonfire is five parts long, but very little characterization beyond Scoop, Lowlight and some Cobras. The whole thing feels padded out but there's nothing there. Sunbow could've done the story in a two parter.

Yup. I tried watching Dragonfire back in 1997, I fell asleep before the first episode ended. Without Sunbow, I clinged to the animated commercial sequences for the toys and the comics. The 1987 and 1988 line did feel STRONGLY connected to the Sunbow series. Based off of commercials and the catalogs, I believe 1987 would have been a short season, maybe even just a two parter. Dr. Mindbender is obsessed with Cobras cause, and he feels betrayed for Serpentor not being his own unique creation. With the help of Croc Master, Raptor, Big Boa, Road Pig and Crystal Ball, he's able to bring CC back by capturing Sgt. Slaughter and using his DNA Once this is done, Cobra Commander launches a ship into space and they set up a moon base with Techno Vipers and STAR Vipers (I know, Star Viper wasn't out until 1988, but it's close). Cobra has control of some space weapon that destroys the Joe HQ like in Pyramid of Darkness. The Joe's are operating out of the Mobile Command Center and Launch the Defiant to stop them. Cobra Commander escapes on the POGO This series although Cobra loses, weighs out as more a victory for Cobra than the Joes because CC is back and they've lost their base. In 1988: (5-part series) the Joe's are set up for retaliation (yup, I said it). The season pretty much opens with the Joe's getting some payback. My story somewhat follows the Cobra Island Civil War in the comics, the animated commercial sequences, and the card art. They infiltrate Cobra Island with a small commando team and then send in the support troops on the Rolling Thunder with the Stealth Fighter in support. They blow up Cobra Buggs and Maggots. Cobra Commander is losing the fight, but then Destro drops in and pushes the Joe's off the island. They relocate to a base Destro has in the snow somewhere. The new Joe's are struggling because they don't work well as a team. Destro get's the upperhand on them, but they are saved by Battle Force 2000, who do work perfectly as a team. The Joe's work with Battle Force 2000 and the SUPER TROOPER (thought I forgot about him didn't you!), who are able to force Destro and CC to retreat. Regular episodes would not include Battle Force 2000, except Dodger. Although it would never be confirmed in the cartoon, Battle Force 2000 would sacrifice themselves somehow for the victory. There would be an explosion, but nobody would say if they were dead or not. Dodger would survive and be thanked for the efforts he and his team provided and the Joe's will have learned the importance of teamwork. 1989: Destro is furious and humiliated, he backs COBRA financially, no longer just in it for personal gain, and COBRA gets a ton of specialized troops. The Joe's are struggling and salvage whatever vehicles they can, this is the creation of Tiger Force, and brings back the older Joe's into the fold. G.I. JOE is familiar to everyone again (except Duke, he died in the movie.). The new characters were overwhelming, time for some familiar faces. Even the standard releases brought a lot of old Joe's back this year: Snake Eyes, Rock N' Roll, Stalker, Dogfight looks like Wild Bill. The old formula is back with Cobra trying to take over the world and G.I. JOE to stop them. From then on the releases are kind of a mess. But episodes would be centralized around Eco-Warriors, Ninja Force and Star Brigade. I'm sure if Sunbow did them it would have been great

Guess who's back? This is in the Hama-written Joe comic that's a continuation of Marvel's run

Well, I operate on the theory that there are only so many stories that can be told, which is why Serpentor stories are always popping up. No other Cobra really pushes Cobra Commander the way Serpentor does. Even Larry is going to rehash the same old stuff.

I think the guy comparing Pythona to Serpentor...in that Pythona may have been an early Serpentor concept...is totally wrong. Pythona being the Empress of Cobra La is something I could easily get behind though. It makes sense. Golobulus is all but useless in the movie and Pythona is the main star. Golobulus is also pointless in that, what's the point of creating an Emperor if you are the supreme ruler, huh? What? Yeah.
It makes her have a King/Queen relationship with Serpentor which just works on so many levels.
