I thought that a subtle diss at Lucas, but that would be petty from a fan like Abrams who got his dream job directing a Star Wars sequel, something that years ago most people thought would never happen.
Wouldn't have call it a director's cut, but special edition/whatever. That's been done by people who've said "the released film was director's cut". (Ridley Scott, IIRC)
Yeah, Disney wants as much $$$$ from fans as possible, so the scenes will be seen somehow, if just as deleted scenes.
Meanwhile, Lucas made some joke about Star Wars being his kids and it was like selling them to white slavers, but people have taken it out of context.
