I got GIJoe the Movie on tonight. Blu Ray. Looks great.
I also took the time to look through my figures tonight. Some great memories and yeah. That's about it. Friday Night was sort of a joe night for me.

They should do an alternate reality comic book series where Cobra-La was defeated but none of the Joes at the attack on Cobra-La survived, leaving only Alpine, Gung-Ho, Bazooka and Doc (and maybe Duke) to rebuild the GI JOE team. I guess Sparks could come back, too.

I guess Sparks could come back, too. Duke never made it. Get over it guys At the end of the movie when Falcon tells Jinx and Sgt. Slaughter to, "Get out here! It's gonna blow!" Slaughter says, "We all go home or nobody goes home!" He should just say, "YO! JOE!" and then the place goes BOOM!!! Your idea makes the rest of the 1987 and 1988 line up make more sense. The Gung Ho in Dress Blues serves more as funeral attire and pretty much up to him to single handedly rebuild G.I. JOE. In my world, Alpine should be paralyzed, never able to climb again. Bazookas head trauma would leave him in a vegetative state on life support. This would serve only to point out the high price of freedom.

True, if you are gonna kill off most of the team, then Duke should go, too.
Storm Shadow would defect...it's not like we saw him at Cobra-La.
Destro only surviving Cobra...or is the gold-masked Destro really just the next head of his clan?
Tiger Force are alternate universe JOES, who are evil and came to conquer Earth. (Even More Worlds Without End)

Rise of Cobra does give Baroness proper motive to de-mutate Cobra Commander, Rex's sister.

I thought being the odd person out was okay motivation. Destro was clearly Cobra's second in command in Dragonfire's reduced Cobra leadership. After Destro dumps her, what power she had was eroded. Baroness gets Gnawgahyde to be her lackey makes sense after Serpentor disses Gnawgahyde.
Oddly, Zarana seems to be CC's go-to-girl in most of Season 1 of Dic. Strangely mimics later issues of the comic book. Someone could write an article showing the unintentional parallels of the comic and cartoon.

Wow. I watched Arise yesterday, very much a boy's club affair. Not much of any female character, even Zarana is used sparingly.

I don't think the Zarana and CC comparison was unintentional. The cartoon writers took a lot of things from the comics.

I seem to recall RodZD adhering to this kid being Cobra Commander. It all makes sense to me, Duke protects him as children, go on into the military, that air strike comes early, Rex meets Mindbender, goes on to seek out more knowledge before joining up with Cobra La, where he is further deformed.

I don't think the Zarana and CC comparison was unintentional. The cartoon writers took a lot of things from the comics. I dunno. Season 1 DIC Cartoons would've be in production in 89 or so for fall of 1990. When did Zarana become CC's right hand woman, not until a bit later, IIRC, like 1992. Now the original Commander did spare her from the treason charge after he came back. But it seemed like after one mission she was on the back burner while CC conquered Benzheen or whatever, then attacked Destro's castle with the Crimson Twins. I think it boiled down to there being only two significant enemy female characters, both whose toys were long out of production by 89/90, so they ran with Zarana more in season 1 for whatever reason. Wow. I watched Arise yesterday, very much a boy's club affair. Not much of any female character, even Zarana is used sparingly. Baroness isn't even at Mindbender's Serpentor pitch meeting. But two cobra officers are. I notice after ARISE..., the 1985 Joes are sidelined to non-speaking roles, except for Flint, LJ and Shipwreck. I understand focusing on the new characters, but really...even Duke and Scarlett get speaking parts. Gung-Ho has at least two decent roles.

Yeah, you think Zarana would have been more pissed off at CC for burying her brother in a freighter...unless she was like my sister. In the comics, right after the Cobra Civil War, Zarana becomes CC's gal (although CC was Fred the VII at the time). He puts her in charge of Broca Beach too. That's in the 1987 to 1988 time frame, but I could be wrong, maybe as late as 1989. Still makes me think it's just another page they stole of Larry Hamas desk. ... 1986 was for COBRA, 1985 was for JOE. Kind of bums me out when you see how selling the products outweigh character development....but it is a toyline. ******* Love that pic of Duke helping the wimp The CC concept there is a good one!!!

That is true, Destro took over things sort of for some issues, but yeah, Zarana was doing stuff for fake CC. IIRC, her first big break was when Serpentor replaces Baroness with Zarana as head of the Cobra Consulate...which is what turns Baroness against Serpy. Reminds me that I've never filled all the gaps in restoring my comic book collection (yeah, I could buy the collected volumes, but it's not the same without that crappy old comic paper!)
It was really in later issues when she was actually hanging around Cobra Commander a lot of the time like Baroness in the early issues, as opposed to being on a mission or in command of something somewhere. I chalk that up to Hama getting a bit lazy with Cobra as an organization (where did the twins disappear to after the desert war?)

The Hasbro reps kept Hama from using characters that were discontinued. Comic book writers probably never had to deal with the kind of crap he did. They rush to get their story drawn and written before the monthly deadline and go! Hama's work probably got tore up in front of him and had guys say, "We need to see the new figures and vehicles, make it happen!"
I picked up a few of the hardcover comic volume reissues. I was blown away at how much Hama did for G.I. JOE. I see the work he put into it much more clearly now, and have more respect for the comics than I once had. I always liked them, but I didn't know how much of a driving force it really was for the line. I was going to pick up the whole series, but I've decided I'm done with G.I. JOE...aside from using them for customz that is. I actually feel that way across the board for all the toy lines, Transformers, He-Man, and Star Wars.
