So, I was thinking about how Bruce Willis is G.I. JOE in the last film. And if this fact should make his other movies connected to G.I. JOE now? I believe it does, in a non-official way. Name changes are pretty much irrelevant, so don't read into those details too far, it happens for security reasons. Anyway, lets start analyzing the tie-ins
I think the most recent connections off the top of my head are;
Tears of the Sun: Bruce is the team leader of a group of Navy Seal commandos who disobeys orders to do the right thing. Downright straight up classic G.I. JOE story. I also think the black male Navy Seal guy works great as Stalker, and you can pin G.I. JOE names to the rest of the team too.
Armageddon: Joe die's at the end saving the planet, and the story is pretty much ripped right out of the main series of the comic. Joe has retired, or in his off time is an oil driller. I can accept this as canon, and it's a nice way for Joe to go out saving the world.
Die-Hard: Sure, why not. Before he became an oil driller, he served as a cop for a good portion of his career, why not. I can accept his military days were before becoming a cop.
Expendables: Joe is a CIA operative, nothing unusual here. Also does the right thing in the end, this follows his character from the other films. This is one of the more important films, because it ties in pretty much every major action star from the 80's to the present day. We can pretty much accept all of the Expendables as Joe's. Jet Li works for me as Quick Kick. Harrison Ford as the real Hawk. Chuck Norris is CHuck Norris. And so on. This trilogy needs a deeper examination to connect the characters to Joe's, it's a long list. However, since we now have Stallone, IMHO it finally unofficially connects Rocky to the Joe line...and Rambo, lol.
Other films it connects sort of: Commando, Predator, ect. ect.
The whole thing got me thinking because I was rewatching "Tears of the Sun" and I couldn't stop thinking that Bruce was G.I. JOE. Having him take that role was a big deal, it will change the way I look at those older movies now.
