Ok... CW superhero shows... I know I know.
But this is actually made by and for DC streaming. They are also airing it on CW. So in terms of production values, its a step above an average episode of, say, Legends of Tomorrow.
I will give my impressions:
Strong show, likeable characters.
DC comics always do the idea of places, so Gotham City and Metropolis, here in Stargirl, its Blue Valley, the idea of a typical small town in America. Definite Back to the Future vibs with it.
So, you have the legacy of the past, Justice Society and the Injustice Society. Courtney's step dad, Pat, was the sidekick of Starman. So, he gets really put in the spot of talking about a log of retro comicbook nonsense. But Luke Wilson is a great get for the show. He does earnest really good. "It was an honor to be a sidekick!"
Courtney once she finds out of things, is convinced Starman was her father and quickly lionizes him and is motivated by that. However, there's a scene in the lunch room when she sticks up for this girl being bullied by jocks. The point being, she has it in her already. I think what the deal will be is her day really was just trash who walked out on her family. Courtney will instead be heroic by what's in her and also Pat instilling the tradition of retro heroes.
The Injustice villains have been chilling. So you got the what secrets are in small towns trope in overdrive. Brianwave as the first villain is an excellent foil. Because Courtney learns quickly, gotta control your thoughts. She was very sloppy in how it plays out. She has a learning curve to topple.
Definitely give this a solid A.
Eps 1 and 2 plays as one story, so that's what you want if you want to see our lead solidified as Stargirl!
