Revenge of the Pharaohs
I had this on VHS tape somehow. And I always hated it.
So, Night Creeper Leader during a robbery (Night Creepers and oddly, Laser Vipers) bumps his head, comes to think that he is reincarnated Pharaoh and Lady Jaye is also to be his wife.
Destro informs Cobra Commander, Cobra is broke. So, the idea is they'll ransom Pyramid City by planting bombs in a dam and destroy the city unless Night Creeper Leader is made ruler of Egypt. There are some decent scenes where Cobra Commander plays into Night Creeper Leader's delusions. There is one of the worst Cobra battle cries I've ever heard when Cobra attacks.
Sgt. Slaughter is leading GIJoe team via satellite tv in acrobatics. No one wants to see that. Just bad. But on the other hand, I thought Lady Jaye's dialogue in that scene almost sounded like a real person remarking on it.
Bullhorn negotiates, but its played for laughs, even Cobra Commander thinks garbage disposal is fitting for Night Creeper Leader, but the Night Creeprs behind him aren't happy, so he does change his tune.
Lady Jaye at the beginning of the episode speaks highly of the Pharoah statue, "might of been my kind of guy." Seems very much single here. There's two moments in the episode, a close up of her hair in the wind driving a jeep and then a close up of her winking to Night Creeper Leader, that are animated better than usual in DIC. Someone liked Lady Jaye.
Different things going on: Captain Grid-Iron and Ambush get rid of the bombs, Lady Jaye is kidnapped and plays into being Night Creeper Leader's gal to manipulate him, Cobra uses the city evacuation as a chance to loot the city. Destro looting seems beneath him.
Grid-Iron makes one football pun, finally remember what it reminds me of, Ace and his dumb poker puns in Sunbow.
So, Night Creeper Leader feels betrayed, manages to set off the explosion, all be it only one bomb, Cobra ground forces are forced to help divert the flood. Lady Jaye and Night Creeper Leader are stuck on a piece of land not unlike the deal in Revenge of Cobra Lady jaye and others find themselves in. Cobra Commander does get NCL out of there because he values the services of Night Creepers. While leaving, he does use his weapon to allow Lady Jaye to walk a rope to safety. Wow. Not completely two dimensional. A bit of depth?
The real problem with this episode isn't the characters, its just the general backgrounds. It all looks very poorly done and I don't believe this is an actual location(s) where stuff is happening. But I was wrong for hating it. I think its a stronger episode than the prior one (the drag humor is cringe and Lady Jaye is a much stronger lead than either Ambush or Pathfinder). Sunbow never really did the villain capturing a female as an object of desire trope, so this feels a bit more original in concept.
I'll give it 2 1/2 stars out of 4.
